Mexican aversion to literature

On 06 December 2012, I wrote Lame excuse for poor Latino readers.

Why are Latino children not reading as well as white non-Latino children? “Researchers” have found an excuse! The books do not have enough Latino characters. Yes, that is the allegation. The characters are too white, and young Latino readers cannot identify with such whiteness.

I realize the Mexicans do not represent all Latinos, but Mexicans do represent the largest percentage of Latinos in the United States. Mexico has a reading problem.

New York Times: The Country That Stopped Reading

Once a reasonably well-educated country, Mexico took the penultimate spot, out of 108 countries, in a Unesco assessment of reading habits a few years ago.

How eerie! A culture, a nation, has developed an aversion to literature. I suspect that students of Mexican origin in the United States do not read well because their parents came from a culture that no longer values reading.

That’s quite depressing. Wish they had linked to the UNESCO study though.
